Return To The Good Ol’ Days of Ignorance

Whiplash inducing quote of the day from Republican Mike Pence, speaking in Iowa:

“To those who say we should focus on fiscal issues, instead of the right to life, I say, ‘What is more fiscally responsible than rolling back this administration’s effort to expand funding for abortion at home and abroad?’” Pence said.
“What is more fiscally responsible than denying any and all funding to Planned Parenthood of America?”
Could this guy be any more of an idiot?
Here is an excerpt from Planned Parenthood’s mission statement:
“We are a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.

For more than 90 years, Planned Parenthood has promoted a commonsense approach to women’s health and well-being, based on respect for each individual’s right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning.”

Yessir, Mr. Pence.  Let’s party like it’s 1920.

  1. Pence is playing at a Presidential run. He’s big on the fiscal thing. But was a surprise “Values Voters” straw poll winner a couple of weeks ago. He’s wrong to go this way.

    • Thanks for your comment, Doug. What really irks me about his statement is that Planned Parenthood isn’t just about abortion providers, it’s about EDUCATION. Sadly, the “E” word has become something to disparage in this country and we’re all the poorer for it.

  2. aaaaaargh! these cavemen will never get it… “abstinence only” education is a JOKE, and the ONLY organization doing something to truly prevent abortion is Planned Parenthood…

  3. As soon as I heard about the DNA evidence for inter-breeding between Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens, I’ve been keeping a sharp eye out for signs and symptoms indicating LARGE SHITLOADS of Neanderthal DNA in modern humans. I think I’ve found another repository in Mike Pence. How else to explain his thinking?

  4. Am I missing something? The right to lifers are over represented in the Tea Party, right? And the Tea Party is anti socialism. But isn’t the entire apparatus to help unwanted babies fundamentally socialist, and isn’t that why there are a lot of unwanted babies because it is financially rewarding to young girls?

  5. The thing is, if women and girls get birth control and educated on the various options of birth control, there wouldn’t be so many abortions. I’m pro-choice in the first trimester, but I sure as heck wouldn’t want to have to make such a choice. Can you imagine how awful that would be to decide, regardless of the debate when life begins? I can’t say if it’s right or wrong b/c I honestly don’t know when life begins, etc., but it’s a woman’s right to make that decision as long as the fetus isn’t viable outside the womb or in extreme cases when the mother’s life is at risk late term.

    • Thank you, Lisa, for your comment! Yes, that’s exactly what Planned Parenthood has been trying to get through the thick skulls of people who oppose them.

I have always had the nagging feeling that the “abortion debate” is more about keeping control over women than it is about “the right to life.” Just sayin…

  6. Umm, does Planned Parenthood actually receive funds in any form from the government? What is Pence talking about (except his usual I Hate Women theme)?

One of his colleagues yestereday suggested that women who live with men outside marriage shouldn’t be allowed ot teach in public schools. That is about as over the top as I’ve ever heard from a congress critter.

    • In 2009 under Title X (or family planning) of the Public Health Services Act, Planned Parenthood received approximately $350 million in government grants and contracts. [EDIT: Since posting that amount I’ve visited the HHS website and now think that attributing that whole amount to PP is probably Mr. Pence’s doing. There are other organizations that receive grants and contracts under Title X, not just PP.] That same year, Mike Pence (or as I like to call him Mike Putz) sponsored a bill to deny funding for that organization using the same argument as stated by him above.

Shaun Kenney, executive director of American Life League, contended that “it makes no sense for the federal government to spend millions of dollars killing millions of future taxpayers.”

So it’s not about saving potential lives, but about saving potential TAXPAYERS.

      • So funds to Planned Parenthood are new? I guess we can contract out brutal wars, but not reproduction services.

By the way, re the ‘unmarried woman’ thing above, I don’t believe it applied to unmarried men.

  7. The funding for Planned Parenthood isn’t new—the 2009 stats were just the latest figures I saw that were available.

As for the unmarried woman thing, why are these people who proclaim to want “less government” the first ones to want to insert more government involvement in our lives? I tells ya, Moe…

  8. I sometimes think that a certain amount of the creepy drivel that is coming out of some of these politicians mouths is all about shock value, since they have seen the success of such incendiary verbage by various unnamed persons. Otherwise, global warming has melted an awful lot of brain cells.
