Hold On, Medicare…I’m a Comin’!

In honor of my birthday yesterday, here’s Paul McCartney’s “When I’m 64.”  Which I am.

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now,
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine?

If I’d been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me,
Will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four?

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
oooo
You’ll be older too, (ah ah ah ah ah)
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage
In the Isle of Wight,
If it’s not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck, and Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view.
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, Wasting Away.

Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four?

Whoo!

    • Thank you! The one at the bottom of the post is an artist trading card I made a couple of years ago. The quote gets more trenchant with every passing year, unfortunately. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by, whatsnormality! Y’all come back.

    • You betcha! (Sorry, must have been listening too much to Sarah Palin’s version of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere: You Know, the Guy Who Warned the British by Ringing Bells So They Wouldn’t Take Away Our Guns.”)

  1. Hi,
Happy Birthday (Sorry I’m a bit late) I hope you had a fantastic day.
love the song you decided on, and the picture, that is great, to be that flexible, if only. 🙂

  2. Happy belated birthday! I’m still older than you. Speed it up a little, will ya?

The things that crack me up most about that picture are the earrings and dark pantyhose. She was obviously going somewhere. I guess the bus was late.

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY a few days late! I’m always late with birthday greetings anyway. I love the card and it’s so true. Also love the McCartney song. I remembered Rod McKuen on my birthday blog this year. “People on their birthdays, are fond of looking back, to half-remembered yesterdays…

    • Thanks! I just finished reading “Moonwalking with Einstein” by Joshua Foer and he has some really interesting thoughts on memory, especially how time seems to speed up as we age. I’d always heard that, but now that I’m older I can attest to it first hand!

I’ll be 64 next month, so I know what you’re going through. (“Golden years,” my butt!)
