WASHINGTON — Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Friday that the shootings that took place in an Aurora, Colo. movie theater hours earlier were a result of “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs” and questioned why nobody else in the theater had a gun to take down the shooter.
During a radio interview on The Heritage Foundation’s “Istook Live!” show, Gohmert was asked why he believes such senseless acts of violence take place. Gohmert responded by talking about the weakening of Christian values in the country.
“You know what really gets me, as a Christian, is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of terror like this takes place,” Gohmert said.
“Some of us happen to believe that when our founders talked about guarding our virtue and freedom, that that was important,” he said. “Whether it’s John Adams saying our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people … Ben Franklin, only a virtuous people are capable of freedom, as nations become corrupt and vicious they have more need of masters … We have been at war with the very pillars, the very foundation of this country.”
Ernest Istook, the host of the show and a former Oklahoma congressman, jumped in to clarify that nobody knows the motivation of the alleged Aurora gunman. Gohmert said that may be true, but suggested the shootings were still “a terrorist act” that could have been avoided if the country placed a higher value on God.
“People say … where was God in all of this?” Gohmert said. “We’ve threatened high school graduation participations, if they use God’s name, they’re going to be jailed … I mean that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don’t want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present.”
Gohmert also said the tragedy could have been lessened if someone else in the movie theater had been carrying a gun and took down the lone shooter. Istook noted that Colorado laws allow people to carry concealed guns.
“It does make me wonder, with all those people in the theater, was there nobody that was carrying a gun that could have stopped this guy more quickly?” he asked.

Oh, MORE people shooting at each other in a darkened theater, nothing but more death and injury would have would have come from that. Good grief, people. Assault rifles are not typical guns, this was a premeditated action and more shooters woud have made things so much worse. Fine, everybody can be licensed to carry a handgun, fine, I’ll concede that. MAYBE somebody would have stopped this lunatic. Assault rifles, really, why should or would anybody have access to one?

“Louie Gohmert: Texas’ Biggest Asshat” — Perfect description!!! That is exactly what I thought, when I saw this news earlier. What a bore/’Asshat’!
Can you only imagine what could/would have happened if others were carrying guns, and they all got into a huge ‘gun-fight’? That is as scary as the awful thing that was already happening.
So, so, so, very sad — and so unnecessary. Where are all these ‘unhinged’ people coming from? And what is it, they are trying to prove?

It is interesting to me that the atheists these so called ‘christians’ are afraid of do not say such crazy, hurtful nasty things that christian do.
Maybe God does not want to be associated with the republicans at this point in time, they maybe too crazy even for Him!!!
And for all the republicans that are moaning about the fact that nobody in the audience took care of the shooter or even had a gun to take him down, I would like to see them demonstrate on video how they would have handled the shooter under the same circumstances.
Let them show us how its done.

Mmm… yeah. Let’s play that tape out to the end. Pistol Packin’ Pete goes to the Movies. With his 9mm Sig in a pancake holster under his shirt. Enter one James Holmes, stage right. In the esteemed Congressman’s world, Pete whips out his 9mm and plugs him, thereby bringing a rapid end to a rampage of death and carnage.
Unfortunately for the storyline, the author has failed to take into account several key plot points. Most notably:
1. The shooter was wearing full-on body armor. You know, the kind of stuff cops and soldiers wear to protect them from… umm… BULLETS?
2. It’s dark in a movie theater. Think that doesn’t make a difference? It sure as hell does when you can’t see your sights.
3. There are a couple of hundred panicked people getting in the way of your shot. Pesky would-be victims.
4. It’s a chemical environment. Ever been tear gassed Louie? I HAVE. Everybody who’s ever been through Army basic training has. And lemme tell ya, you can see, you can’t breathe, and you sure as HELL can’t shoot.
5. And oh, by the way, your “target” is SHOOTING BACK. This ain’t the gun club Louie. This is for-real. Real bullets change everything.
The more likely ending to Louie’s story is that the body count goes up exponentially with every imbecile in the crowd that decides to play Wyatt Earp. At least until Holmes figures out to just fire on the muzzle flashes through the gas (that HE was prepared for, with his non-regulation gas mask) and spares the rest of the crowd from being killed by friendly fire.
There’s always some low-forehead who puts forth this argument any time some lunatic shoots up a theater, or a shopping mall, or a school yard. Then again, what can you expect from someone whose knowledge of US history seems to have been taught form one of those revisionist textbooks they’re peddling down in Texas these days. I suppose allowances must be made…
